Living with the Earth (Geo): Part 2

The Oki Islands' Perspective on 'Geo-tourism'

'The formation of the land,' 'the unique ecosystem', and 'the human activities' nurtured by these natural elements are the thematic pillars and key objectives of the 'Oki UNESCO Global Geopark.' Rather than simply preserving these valuable local resources, the goal is for local residents and businesses to utilize them to promote sustainable economic and cultural activities actively. Through this process, the people of Oki cultivate pride in their region, foster a deep love for their homeland, share its stories, and work together to overcome local challenges, revitalizing their community with their own hands. I felt that the philosophy of the 'Oki UNESCO Global Geopark' embodies not only their vision of how they wish to be but also their passionate determination

So, how does Oki plan to realize its vision moving forward, and by what means? By utilizing local resources while protecting and nurturing them, they aim to foster regional development and pass these treasures on to future generations. As a means to achieve this, they have chosen the path of 'geo-tourism' and are beginning to move forward as a united community.

In the world of tourism today, there is a trend of combining tourism with specific themes, such as 'eco-tourism,' 'adventure tourism,' and 'sake brewery tourism,' to attract domestic and international tourists while revitalizing local communities and industries. The possible themes are virtually limitless, and because of this, the choice of a theme itself often reflects the uniqueness and character of a region. Although there are no fixed definitions for these various forms of tourism, if we were to explain 'geo-tourism' in simple terms, it could be described as a journey to experience the geological heritage of a region and to learn about its origins, history, and culture.

However, while tourism-based regional revitalization is being pursued in many places, merely skimming the surface of a theme and using it superficially is unlikely to energize a community, solve local challenges, or realize the vision it strives for. It is crucial not to be swayed by trendy themes but instead to critically consider whether the chosen path truly reflects the essence of the community, whether it serves as an appropriate means to achieve the desired future, and whether it genuinely supports progress. Most importantly, what matters is whether the community and its people have an unwavering determination to commit to that path. That, I believe, is of utmost importance

Why has Oki chosen 'geo-tourism'?

The answer lies in the magnificent geological heritage preserved on the islands, the unique ecosystems, flora, and fauna nurtured by them, and the people who have lived and thrived on this land, along with their history and culture. These diverse resources, which embody the region's identity, are key to ensuring the area's sustainable development and passing its legacy on to future generations.

The people of Oki deeply understand that fostering connections and relationships with those outside the region is essential to achieving these goals. They recognize that the power of tourism can play a vital role in building those connections. This choice feels natural, as it aligns with how the people of Oki have long engaged with the outside world.

In a way, they have integrated the principles and power of tourism into the foundation of the Global Geopark philosophy, which emphasizes the central role of the local community. This, then, is what Oki envisions as 'geotourism.'

A New Value and Perspective of Travel is Born

Tourism is not merely a one-way act where travelers from outside discover a new world, find stimulation, or seek healing. It is a form of intellectual and cultural exchange—a two-way interaction where people from within and outside the region connect and engage with one another before, during, and after the trip. Through these interactions, mutual understanding is fostered, and the presence of visitors allows locals to feel a greater sense of affection and pride in their region.

From this exchange, travelers, residents, workers, and, most importantly, the community itself benefit in various ways. Because Oki understands the transformative power of tourism, they aim to overcome local challenges and achieve their envisioned future through their unique approach to 'geo-tourism.'

Surely, these efforts will not be limited to within the region but will likely extend to addressing challenges faced by other areas and Geoparks worldwide. Furthermore, from a global perspective, Oki's initiatives may draw significant attention.

Within the international network of UNESCO Global Geoparks, efforts by Geoparks around the world and the insights gained from them are regularly compiled and shared to advance their development. Oki's initiatives will eventually become part of this collective effort, shared through the network, and disseminated worldwide.

The challenges of these small islands may well transcend Japan and connect to the future of the planet—truly a monumental undertaking.

The era of outdated business models that merely consume local resources and culture is coming to an end. People are now seeking diverse values, sensitively recognizing them, and beginning to explore new purposes for travel. The focus is shifting from what one can gain from visiting a place to what one can give to that place. This, surely, will become a new value in the world of travel.

By traveling, one can contribute to someone or to the destination itself. And it feels as though Oki is on the brink of creating a system that makes this possible.

The way we travel, work, and live. This small island, quietly floating in a corner of the Earth, is now trying to share new values and perspective with us.
